Frank Jay Haynes was the 19th century’s most important photographer of Yellowstone, creating a sizable body of images that shaped the public consciousness of that remote western landscape. Haynes first visited Yellowstone in 1881 and two years later was appointed “Official Photographer for the Yellowstone Park Improvement Company, also Superintendent of the Art Department, with Headquarters at the Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming.” In 1884, he purchased a 20- x 24-inch camera to make “extra-large” photographs that could be displayed aboard passenger ships on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Ernest C. Withers could be called the original photographer for the Civil Rights Movement. Withers’ coverage of the brutal murder of a fourteen-year-old African-American, Emmett Till, in 1955 became a catalyst for the push toward equal rights.

In this photograph, sanitation workers assemble in front of Clayborn Temple for a solidarity march. On the 53rd day of the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ strike, a week after this picture was taken, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated on the Lorraine Motel balcony.
